City life / The considered itinerary
The luxury of making only one plan
An argument for a less crowded New York itinerary.
There is a particular kind of New York itinerary that looks excellent in a shared document and feels exhausting by lunch. Every hour has a destination. Every destination requires another car. Somewhere between the second reservation and the third outfit, the city disappears.
Try a different brief. Give the day one essential booking. It might be a performance, an exhibition or a dinner you genuinely want. Let that choice determine the neighborhood, then leave the surrounding hours open.
For the woman arriving after a week of meetings, this is not a failure to maximize the trip. It is a useful boundary. You already spend enough time moving between commitments. Your weekend should not need a project manager.
For the friend who lives here, the same rule applies. Suggest a meeting place and a realistic time. Save the elaborate route for a day when everyone actually wants one. A short plan is easier to accept and much easier to enjoy.
Clothes can follow the itinerary. Choose shoes for the walking you expect to do, a layer you can carry and a bag that leaves your hands free. The outfit does not need to predict five different versions of the night.
The useful question is simple: What would make this day feel like time well spent? Book that first. Leave a little space for New York to supply the rest.
